You know you are an artist when...

You know you are an artist when....(based solely on personal experience)

  1. Almost all of your furniture has smears of paint on it.
  2. Every wall in your home has one or more of your works and there is still a stack gathering dust.
  3. You love getting your hands dirty with paint - in your eyes it is better than any manicure.
  4. There is always a 'work in progress' on your easel and a few more behind the door.
  5. You've accidentally dipped your brushes in coffee and drank the water you rinsed your brushes in.
  6. You look at blank walls and get excited at the prospect of how you could fill them up
  7. You click pictures of telephone wires and imagine how you would paint the raindrops sliding off them.
  8. You wonder that colors you would use to paint the shadow of the street lamp while you wait for the bus.
  9. You think in blues and oranges with hints of yellow when looking at a stormy sky.
  10. You've spent considerable time thinking about how sunlight changes colors over the course of the day.
  11. You sit in meetings and mentally draw caricatures of people.
  12. You can't help admiring rusted containers and peeling paint and thinking of what great abstract art they would make.
  13. When sitting in a bar, you look at every beer bottle and cocktail in terms of how 'paint-worthy' it is.
  14. You've had disagreements with your spouse if your sketchbook qualifies for the list of 'essentials' when packing light for your holiday.
  15. You have bouts of paint-marathons from time to time - especially the week before you have planned an exhibition.
  16. You look at everything as a subject for painting - the neighbor's dog, clothes on the laundry line, the delivery truck, people at the train station - everything.
  17. All you want in your dream house is a studio.
  18. For you a white plate is never white - its made up of a fifty shades of grey.
  19. You remember the day  you got your first box of paints.
  20. You laugh at the absurdity of all of the above but wouldn't change a thing.

Cyberspace

Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematical concepts… A graphic representation of data abstracted from banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding…
William Gibson, coining the term “cyberspace” in Neuromancer (1984)
Set of two paintings - 25 x 30 cm each
